National Year of Reading: What are you Reading??

This year is the National Year of Reading and so I thought I would share with you some of the books that give me inspiration for making cards. One of my favourite things to do as a teacher is to read books to the children, something I never tire of and the kids seem to enjoy discovering books with me also. They think I’m nuts because I put on all the voices and read loud or soft depending on the story and make hand gestures and act bits out. Fun!!!!My Dearest Dinosaur

This book, My Dearest Dinosaur, is by a fabulous Australian author called Margaret Wild. She has such a way with words as shown in this little excerpt

“My dearest Dinosaur, such news! The eggs have hatched and we have seven little ones. I wish you could see the wriggly, tiggly rascals.”

Donna Rawlins is also a great illustrator who I was lucky enough to see at the National Library a few years ago. It is fascinating to find out how they make their illustrations for their books and she was so sharing with her work and her methods.

This story is written in journal form and in the classroom I like to get the children to imagine they are dinosaurs (lots of play acting and miming) and to write a journal entry for what they would be doing as a dinosaur.

Here is the card that this book inspired.

Dinoroar Tyrannosaurus

Dinoroar is such a wonderful stamp set for kids or for those ‘fossils’ that may appreciate receiving an old dinosaur card. 🙂

This card is one of my ageabilities series of cards. At present it does not have an age on it, but if you want to order this card from me, then all you need to do is specify the age of the recipient and I will add the age for you.

Stamp Set: Dinoroar, French Foliage,
Card: Pumpkin Pie, Whisper White, Elegant Eggplant, Old Olive
Inks: Bashful Blue, Old Olive, Pumpkin Pie, Elegant Eggplant, Basic Black
Accessories: Bigz Die Circle Die, 2 1/2″ circle punch

I hope you enjoyed dinoroar and I hope that you celebrate the National Year of Reading and read plenty of books to your kids.

What was/ or is the book you most enjoy/ed reading to your children?? Leave a comment and we’ll see what peoples favourites are.

Have you seen the new mini catalogue yet?

Last night I held the launch of my new Autumn/Winter mini catalogue and we used my favourite stamp set from the new mini, Bordering on Romance.

We had a lovely time stamping two wonderful cards (stay tuned for later posts) and eating a lemon coconut cake. There were two lucky door prizes, this was one of them. Lucky I took a picture of it before I gave it away….

How do you Use your Baby Wipes

I no longer have any babies in my household, but baby wipes are so useful. Especially for stamping. And I don’t mean just for cleaning up messes.

This card was made using the baby wipe as a stamp pad technique and the medallion stamp.

Big Shot and Chocolate Mmmmmm!

So what does the Big Shot have to do with Chocolate?

Easter of course!!

Still confused?? By using my Big Shot machine I was able to easily make this adorable little Easter Basket just big enough to hold some chocolate Easter Eggs. MMMM!

Easter Basket

The Big Shot made it so easy.

Do you know that you can cut up to 8 layers of fabric at once? You can only do this with the Big Shot Dies (not sizzlets). For the basket I cut 4 layers of fabric at once. I cut a 5cm strip of material and then folded it concertina style, placed it over the small scallop square of the Scallop Square Duo Bigz Die. Voila! 4 pieces exactly the same size. The edge of the scallops formed the edge upon which to place my sewing machine foot when sewing the scallop squares together.

I’m definitely planning on making more of these. They can not only be used as easter baskets. Wouldn’t they look lovely on the coffee table with some lollies in them at Christmas or Birthdays? I’m planning on using mine to hold supplies at my workshops to showcase the gorgeous Stampin’ Up! Fabric.

Oh and I have to mention (upon pain of death), that my daughter Chantelle (the budding photographer) took these photos of the Easter Basket for me. 🙂

Happy Stamping! (or in this case sewing)

 Big Shot 113439 $149.95
Scallop Square Duo Die 120903 $$39.95
Designer Fabric Flirtatious 122335 $19.95

Stamping Rainbows

What better way to celebrate St Patrick’s Day than to stamp rainbows. Lots of rainbow coloured cards that is. Thanks to all who attended the Stamp-a-stack last night. In between all the talk and laughter and tears (from the laughing) we all managed to make some bright and cheery balloon birthday cards.

rainbow balloon birthday card

Party This Way is such a fabulous stamp set which includes the sentiment so you can make cards using only one stamp set. And the card wouldn’t have been complete without all that bling? Stay tuned for the kit to make this card!!

Stamp Set: Party This Way
Inks: Real Red, Pumpkin Pie, Old Olive, Tempting Turquoise, Rich Razzleberry, Basic Black
Accessories: Dimensionals, Basic Jewels Rhinestones, Paper Snips, Modern Label Punch, Stampin Write Markers

Have You Got Your Favourite Family Recipes All In One Place??

No?? Nor have I. But it is one of those things that is high on my To Do List. This Recipe Folder is fabulous for storing all those recipes in one place. I have one of these planned for each of my children (Shhhh, don’t tell them, I want it to be a surprise).

Recipe Folder

The folder is plastic, so it is splash proof which means you can have it right on your bench while cooking without having to worry about it getting spoilt.

Watermarked Recipe Pages

Each recipe page has the swirl as a watermark (can only just see it in the picture) and to protect it, it is placed inside a plastic sleeve.

Isn’t the artwork just beautiful! I am biased here. My daughter Yvette drew it and painted the swirl for me. I then mounted it on Stampin’ Up! Cardstock in Basic Black and Real Red. The Flowers are some old Pretties Kit silk flowers that I have died Red. I also sprayed the flower with some Shimmer Paint to give it some sparkle. I used a pearlised bead for the centre of the flower (the half pearls were too bulky to go in behind the plastic). I also used some Black satin Ribbon to finish it off. Wouldn’t it be great to hand down all those tried and true family recipes to your kids in something as beautiful as this.

What is your favourite tried and true recipe that you would put in a recipe book like this one? Post yours in the comments section of this post.
